Catholic Schools Week Wrap-Up

Maria DiMatteo

National Catholic Schools Week is an annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States, running from Sunday, January 26th through Saturday, February 1st.

During this week, Long Island's Catholic elementary schools organized various special activities and events that celebrated academic achievement, and talent, and put their schools on display for prospective families at their Open Houses. Activities ranged from inviting special guests into the classroom to fun competitions, talent shows, and cultural celebrations.

Here are some examples of how our schools celebrated last week!

At Trinity Regional School in East Northport, students had the chance to invite special guests to school, whether a grandparent, aunt, or cousin. The day was filled with joy and excitement as visitors joined in classrooms, and activities, and enjoyed quality time with their special person.

The school held Battle of the Colors in honor of Maria Regina's Founder's Day in Seaford. Students in grades 5th through 8th competed in both physical and academic challenges. Each team made it down the basketball court leaping through hula hoops and throwing paper airplanes to answer questions hoping their team would come out on top!

Holy Child Academy in Old Westbury hosted a Multicultural Day celebrating diverse cultures around the world. Parents and students made different foods for everyone to try. Holy Child said, "It was a day filled with learning, laughter, and tasty treats."

Students in Kindergarten through 8th grade at Holy Name of Mary in Valley Stream performed in their Annual Catholic Schools Week talent show. There were magic acts, music, karate, and more!

Our Lady of Guadalupe in Deer Park's upper-class students participated in their Second Annual Catholic Schools Week Spelling Bee. OLG said, "Everyone did an exceptional job sounding out the words, asking for sentences and definitions, and used dry-erase boards to work out their words."

Catholic Schools Week is both a celebration of the past and a look toward the future, reinforcing the importance of faith, education, and community in the lives of students, parents, and school staff. We hope all had a fun and successful CSW!
