Elijah's Catholic school journey

I’d like to share with you the story of Elijah, a bright young student who began his education at St.

Martin of Tours in Amityville as a 1st grader. Now, he’s just entering his last year as an 8th grader. Throughout his years at St. Martin’s, Elijah has not only excelled academically but also grown in his faith, played baseball, and participated in numerous activities. For Elijah, St. Martin’s is more than just a school; it’s an extension of his family. His younger brother, Jayden, is now entering 3rd grade, sharing in this enriching experience.

Elijah’s mother, Nicole, a single parent and teacher’s aide, has faced many challenges to keep her children in Catholic school. During the pandemic, Nicole lost her salary and had to rely on her savings to ensure Elijah could continue his education. Her situation worsened when her younger son needed major surgery, leading to overwhelming medical bills. Since 2019, Nicole has received tuition assistance from Tomorrow’s Hope, which has been a lifeline for her family.

“Tomorrow’s Hope has blessed me with being able to give my children the best education while learning their religion and living by the Catholic faith,” Nicole shares

Despite this support, Nicole continues to worry about managing another tuition increase each year. Like many families we serve, she never anticipated the steady rise in Catholic school tuition when she enrolled Elijah in first grade. The 2024-2025 academic year brings a 6% hike, with average costs now exceeding $7,700. With a 21% rise in inflation since 2020 and the increasing cost of living, parents like Nicole, who have modest incomes, are struggling more than ever to keep their children in Catholic schools.

For perspective, the average tuition for Catholic elementary schools on Long Island was $5,500 in 2020. That's a staggering 40% increase in just five years!

These families often live in districts with failing and unsafe schools, and the burden of high tuition fees leaves them desperate and fearful for their children’s educational futures. This is where we need your help. By making a gift to the Tomorrow’s Hope Annual Fund, you can help alleviate the financial strain on hardworking Long Island families, allowing them to keep their children in Catholic elementary schools. Your gift is more than just financial support; it’s an investment in “our” children’s future, and we are deeply grateful for your generosity.

Today’s children are Tomorrow’s Hope, and with your help, we can ensure they have the opportunity to grow in their faith, thrive academically, and build a bright future.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Ismini Scouras

Executive Director

P.S. Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation is an independent 501(c)(3) organization led by a dedicated Board of Directors, committed to making Catholic elementary education on Long Island accessible to all families.
