President The Carey Group, LLC
Michael Carey is the President of the Carey Group, LLC. The Carey Group was formed in the fall of 2004 to service clients whose initiatives and/or projects have a significant governmental interest. In particular, The Carey Group was launched as an outgrowth of Mr. Carey's involvement in two high profile New York projects, the National Sports Museum and the Harlem Park Hotel each of which involves Liberty Bond Financing.
Prior to forming The Carey Group, Mr. Carey was Senior Vice President and General Counsel to Cybersettle, an online settlement company, facilitating high-speed confidential claim settlements by sharing and matching monetary offers and demands via secure web technology. Mr. Carey is still affiliated with Cybersettle in a consulting capacity. Mr. Carey was also a partner at the prestigious Plunkett and Jaffe law firm prior to his employment at Cybersettle.
Mr. Carey has vast experience in major economic development initiatives as a result of being President of the New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC) from 1999-2002 and First Executive Vice President from 1997-1999. The EDC is the primary vehicle for business recruitment and the city's economic development initiatives.
While at EDC, Mr. Carey oversaw a number of high profile projects. These include the revitalization of 125th Street , the development of KeySpan Park and Richmond County Bank Ballpark, the restoration of the Whitehall and St. Georges Ferry terminals; the restoration of the Brooklyn Army Terminal; Strategic Plan for the Redevelopment of the Port of NY; restoration of the Tweed Courthouse, relocating the Fulton Fish Market to Hunts Point and the revitalization of 42nd Street
Prior to joining EDC, Mr. Carey was the Managing Director of the investment banking firm Cambridge Partners, where he specialized in municipal finance and financial products. Before joining Cambridge, he was a partner with the law firm of Whitman Breed Abbot & Morgan, where he practiced corporate and commercial litigation. Mr. Carey began his career at the law firm of Paul Weiss Rifkin Wharton & Garrison. He is a graduate of Fordham University School of Law and the Catholic University of America.
Mr. Carey is a Senior Advisor to the National Sports Museum and a member of its Advisory Board. Mr. Carey was also appointed by Mayor Bloomberg as a Trustee of the Education Construction Fund. He also serves on the Advisory Board of Redwood Partners and is a member of the Board of Directors of Criterion Strategies, Inc. He was recently named to the Board of the New York Convention Center Development Corporation.
