College Associate Dean Suffolk Community College, New York
Dr. Manning has been an educator for more than 30 years. During that time he has been a college counselor, a college basketball coach, the coordinator and director of an Educational Opportunity Program, a Professor of Psychology and Sociology and for 13 years served as the Chief Academic Officer of the Eastern Campus of Suffolk County Community College. During the Spring of 1996 Dr. Manning served as the Acting Provost of the Eastern Campus of Suffolk County Community College. In 1998, Dr. Manning became the Associate Dean of Business and Technology and College-wide Division of Professional Programming and Development. This position was created to direct the development of all campus technology through the newly formed Educational Technology Unit, also under his direction. Dr Manning served for five years as an Educational Consultant to Symbol Technologies.
Currently he is serving as the College Associate Dean for Educational Resources and the Administrator for the Sayville Center and Interim College Associate Dean of Instructional Technology of Suffolk County Community College.
Dr. Manning has an Associates Degree from Suffolk County Community College, a B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. from S.U.N.Y. at Stony Brook.
In addition, he has served as the Administrator/Coordinator and consultant to the ReRout Program a program for inmates and ex offenders in the Suffolk County Prison System. Dr. Manning has been the Co-Director of the Council of International Programs, a Consultant to the N.J. Department of Higher Education, an evaluator and team chair for the Commission on Higher Education Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and for the past ten years has served as the Executive Director of the Institute for Professional Advancement.
Dr. Manning has presented and keynoted at dozens of conferences all over the
Continental United States and Hawaii.
He has presented on such varied topics as Aging and Self-Concept, Developmental Education,
Transplantation, Multiculturalism, Outcomes Assessment, Student Retention and Technology in
Education to name a few. He had a paper on Outcomes Assessment accepted to be presented at
the Bonn Institute in Germany and has been published on a number of these topics.
His paper, Access Does Not Equal Success was published in Current Research, the proceeding
from the 46th Annual New York State Sociological Association Meeting in 1998. Currently his
manuscript for the book Student Persistence in the Open Enrollment Community College has been
accepted for publication by Mellen Publications and will be available next year.
Dr. Manning has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors including Outstanding Young Men of America, S.U.N.Y. Distinguished Alumni Chancellors Award, a Suffolk County Proclamation, Who's Who Among Black Americans, Who's Who in the East, NAACP Award, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who Among American Teachers. Dr. Manning has also been the recipient of a Suffolk County African American Educator Award, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Award, the National Kidney Foundation “Man of the Year”, Who’s Who in America, and numerous proclamations from the Town, County, State of New York, House of Representatives and Congress of the United States.
Most recently, he received the community service award from the Suffolk County Bronze Shields, a Certificate of Recognition from the Islip Town Board, a Citation from State Assemblywoman Patricia Acampora, and Proclamations from County Executive Gaffney, Presiding Officer of the Legislature, Paul J. Tonna and Legislator Alden for his contributions to education and community excellence.
In his spare time, Dr. Manning coaches youth basketball and soccer, serves on the New York State Board of Professional Medical Conduct, United Ways Project BluePrint Steering Committee, the Harborfields Industry Advisory Board and the Hauppauge Industrial Associations Computer Sub Committee and Trade Show Committee.
