During his tenure in the US Senate, D'Amato served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, overseeing legislation affecting America's financial institutions, banking, public and private housing, urban development and foreign trade promotion. Senator D'Amato also served on the powerful Senate Finance Committee controlling legislation regarding bonded debt, customs, general revenue sharing, health programs, social security, tariffs and trade agreements. As Chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (The Helsinki Commission) Senator D'Amato authored the Libya Sanctions Act to combat efforts by renegade nations to finance international terrorism through oil field development. And as a member of the Senate's Caucus on International Narcotics Control, Al D'Amato was a leader in the fight against illegal drugs.

Senator D'Amato resides in his hometown of Island Park, New York and has finally completed building his "dream home" in Long Beach, N.Y. In July of 2004, he married longtime love Katuria Smith. He is the proud father of four children and fourteen grandchildren.
